BEST PRACTICES: Web Services Integration with Ardendo’s Media Asset Management System

Customer Challenge

Fox International sends a significant amount of long-form content from their offices in LA to Buenos Aires for QC, subtitling and archiving. The digital content must be efficiently re-packaged within Fox Latin America for distribution to a variety of media outlets including playout, VOD, mobile and web. To avoid international shipping costs and delays associated with tape delivery, Fox is using the IP networks to deliver the file-based content. However, IP networks tend to have high latency and although faster and more cost effective than tape, Fox wanted to increase the efficiency of their IP-based services. Fox searched for a way to increase their LA to Buenos Aires productivity while not disrupting their existing workflow which is tightly integrated with their Media Asset Management tools.

Signiant Solution

MAM users can schedule, initiate and monitor the movement of digital media packages across the WAN using Signiant's file transfer technology. The Fox MAM is tightly integrated with the Signiant CMM allowing users to maintain the look and feel of the MAM GUI while taking advantage of Signiant's file transfer and security technologies. Using Signiant's Web Services (SOAP) APIs, the MAM can set-up Signiant transfer jobs from LA to Buenos Aires and monitor the progress throughout the digital media package transfer. This solution allows Fox to repackage their existing assets and monetize them faster and more reliably.

Primary Solution Components

The solution required a combination of the following technologies:

  • Signiant CDM software including a Central Media Manager and Media Agents
  • Signiant's Web Services (SOAP) APIs for job creation, initiation, monitoring and status
  • Media Asset Management tools for ingest, media management and browse editing

FOX Workflow:
  1. Signiant jobs are pre-built by system administrators in the Signiant CMM which specify the file transfer parameters between the Media Agents in LA and Buenos Aires.
  2. MAM users ingest content into storage on the Media Asset Management (MAM) system in LA.
  3. Using the MAM GUI, users access the MAM in LA, search and then select the desired packages to be sent to Buenos Aires.
  4. MAM users choose the "Signiant" file transfer option enabling the pre-defined Signiant job.
  5. Through the Signiant API the MAM initiates the Signiant job transferring the digital package from LA to Buenos Aires.
  6. The Media Agent in LA initiates the package transfer to the Media Agent in Buenos Aires.
  7. During the transfer, the job transfer information and status is available through the APIs in the Signiant CMM and presented to the MAM GUI.
  8. A package notification email is sent to specified users upon completion of the transfer to Buenos Aires.
