How COPA90 scaled coverage of the World Cup in Russia

COPA 90 fans jumping and cheering.

Last summer, half the world’s population watched the FIFA World Cup in Russia. Many media companies contributed to the record-breaking coverage, but none are like COPA90

“COPA90 has an emotional connection with the game that engages millions of young football fans around the world. That’s why so many brands, broadcasters and federations look to partner with us.

“Nowhere was that more evident than last year at the FIFA World Cup in Russia where we scaled our publishing output to more than six thousand content assets across multiple platforms, generating more than 750 million views throughout the tournament,” said Barry Flanigan, Chief Product Officer at COPA90.

COPA90 has a huge following, but they do not have the huge on-premises infrastructure common for covering large sports events. We recently wrote a case study on how COPA90 pulled off their World Cup coverage by working with BASE Cloud Media (a Signiant partner), who provided access to the latest cloud-based technology, on demand — including cloud storage and Signiant Media Shuttle. Here’s a quick summary of the full case study.

Scaling Operations for the FIFA World Cup

Throughout the World Cup, Media Shuttle was used to quickly and securely transfer massive amounts of footage from COPA90 producers and creator fans around the world back to London and New York, and to make content continuously accessible in BASE Media Cloud storage.

Media Shuttle was also used to migrate approximately half a petabyte of data into BASE Media Cloud’s storage platform for COPA90’s secure long-term archive.

“We simply couldn’t have scaled our operations for the World Cup without BASE Media Cloud and Signiant.” ~ Barry Flanigan, Chief Product Officer at COPA90

Signiant has been partnering with BASE Media Cloud since 2015. Today, multiple companies around the world use the Media Shuttle with the BASE Media Cloud storage platform to upload, download and share huge digital media deliveries.

What BASE Media Cloud and Signiant provided for COPA90 demonstrates how a business with minimal on-premises infrastructure can execute really big events and work at a global scale.
